UFO

Something strange is hovering the skies above the valley.   Well, knock me down with a garden gnome, it's the sun.  At last.  This is 21 May and I went out without a coat.

I was thinking about the author name game, and got all competitive.  So, I had to deliver some Michael Wood from Alexander Kent to the Isle of Joanne Harris.  It meant going via Barbara Taylor Bradford, over a Rupert Brooke and a Susan Hill, and stopping at the Isle of CS Lewis.

Anonymous - the rodent does not wish to be identified.

Nomad - this goblin is for sale.

And I think another word game is on the way, because I said something by accident yesterday.  I was talking about an 'annoying noise', but it came out as 'annoysing'.

Any more?

"Anonymous!" That's brilliant! For some reason, the word "mouse" always triggers Mistmantle memories for me--but since mice don't appear on the island, my chain-of-thought doesn't make much sense.

Hmm...How about:

alligator: the gatekeeper is a friend

or,

psalm: a charitable gift presented as an afterthought

Those are so sharp. All I can come up with now is

distant - was rude about my mother's sister

Welcome home, Mrs. McAllister!

Oh, goodness--that's wonderful! "Distant"--it's got me kicking with laughter!

My game-day didn't go smoothly. The (JRR) Tol-kien warden of the (Frank) Mc-Court (William) Wilber-forced me to pay before entering; and though I intended to play (Alfred) Tennyson my own, an un-Holman, suffering under the weather, challenged me to a round--as I didn't Dar-win against him, he snatched the game by a small Margi-n (McAllister).

Wilberforce is already claimed, isn't it? I didn't check...but it feels familiar, so my apologies in advance! And Holman is a version of the Bible (though I suppose the name had to have come from somewhere). Not a very satisfactory (or sensible!) sentence, but that's all I can come up with!

Has anybody claimed Wilberforce? Don't think so. I can't think of a thing. I'll have to go into Maughm-ing in Somerset, or just go to John Julius Norwich and be Ronald Searle-y.

Margi McAllister? Who on earth is she? I think you made her up.

Well, I didn't make her up...but I assure you that she is the stuff of legends! You should look her books up sometime.

penchant: a droning, song-like recital referring to writing instruments

Welcome back Mrs McAllister! Ooh I haven't been here for a while, but the game's still going strong it seems! My favorites are nomad, alligator and distant.

Annoysing reminds me of something my sister said when she was little; she was trying to describe something as either "impossible" or "preposterous," but it came out as "imposterous." She was very indignant when we tried to tell her that imposterous didn't mean what she thought it meant. Even to this day, I don't think she believes us.

A new definition for "imposterous"--that one should go in the game (one of them--I'm losing track of the different ones!)!

Long ago it seems--my younger sister was convinced that people received "presidents" on their birthdays and on Christmas. For the rest of the family, it always conjured up images of Abraham Lincoln in wrapping paper.

conjuror: a member of the jury who, if not fake, at least has an ulterior motive

"Presidents," that's adorable!

And I had my own slip-up today; the rain is making all the snails come out, and I saw a rather large one this morning and tried to say "oh a snail shell" but it came out as "oh a shnail."

Presents and presidents? I used to get mixed up between 'soldier' and 'shoulder' as in 'mummy, my soldier hurts'.

Sannie, if you find a shnail without a shell, it'sh not a shnail at all, it'sh a shlug.
